• Oil and gas projects have special characteristics that need a different technique in project management. The development of any country depends on the development of the energy reserve through investing in oil and gas projects through onshore and offshore exploration, drilling, and increasing facility capacities. Therefore, these projects need a sort of management match with their characteristics, and project management is the main tool to achieving a successful project. Written by a veteran project manager who has specialized in oil and gas projects for years, this book focuses on using practical tools and methods that are widely and successfully used in project management for oil and gas projects. Most engineers study all subjects, but focus on project management in housing projects, administration projects, and commercial buildings or other similar projects. However, oil and gas projects have their own requirements and characteristics in management from the owners, engineering offices, and contractors’ side. Not only useful to graduating engineers, new hires, and students, this volume is also an invaluable addition to any veteran project manager’s library as a reference or a helpful go-to guide. Also meant to be a refresher for practicing engineers, it covers all of the project management subjects from an industrial point of view specifically for petroleum projects, making it the perfect desktop manual. Not just for project managers and students, this book is helpful to any engineering discipline or staff in sharing or applying the work of a petroleum project and is a must-have for anyone working in this industry.

The sheer number of processes and their allocation across process groups and knowledge areas may leave project managers in a quandary about where to start and how to apply the many components of project management processes. What is lacking is a simple explanatory guide for the layman that clarifies the "big picture" of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). This explains where a project manager should begin when managing projects, and how the project manager can easily make use of the PMBOK framework to progress from an initial idea to a project schedule.

Because of the growing acceptance of project work there is growing need for qualified staff for managing projects. But there has been much debate within the field of project management as to whether it satisfies criteria for status as a profession. Morris and Pinto reported that development and recognition of a distinct profession of project management has certainly been a strong driver in the development of standards for project management. "A body of knowledge, standards and related assessment and qualification processes can therefore be seen as essential building blocks in the formation and recognition of a profession."According to Kuster et al. there are two main organisations certifying project management skills: International Project Management Association (IPMA) and Project Management Institute (PMI). The scope of this term paper is to verify the truth of this statement and to provide a critical and comparative market overview about different project management certifications as well as certification methods.

  • This book clarifies the differences between plans and schedules, takes the project manager through the process of plan development, and finally, points the way toward successful project execution. Although the terms "plan" and "schedule" are at times used interchangeably, they are in fact very different. A complete project plan contains a project schedule-but it also includes much more than that (e.g., risk management, quality management, human resource management, and procurement). These differences have implications for the layman as well as the experienced project manager and have implications for successful project management practice. Additionally, the contents of the project plan have evolved over time as versions of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) were updated. Due to this, project plans today include important elements that were not included in project planning in the context of earlier versions of the PMBOK and the execution of the project plan requires guidance beyond that which is outlined in the PMBOK framework. The PMBOK emphasizes planning and monitoring and controlling-but very little support is provided for project executing. This begs the question, just what does it mean to execute a project plan?

Only then can we be sure that no important aspects of project management have been forgotten, nor that existing and working strategies, which could be applied to multimedia projects, have been ignored. This paper therefore defines project management and generally describes its areas of responsibility. The question of whether project management is necessary and beneficial needs to be addressed as well. After project management and the necessity to actively apply it in some form has been understood in general, a specific focus on the existing information for multimedia project management will be undertaken. It will become apparent that different viewpoints exist as to whether multimedia project management should apply project management methods of related industry areas, such as software development. This will justify the need to compare multimedia projects with software development projects. After having gained an insight into project management as well as the characteristics of multimedia projects, it is possible t...

As found in most literatures, project risk management has concentrated more on single standalone projects as opposed to managing project risk as portfolio where lesson learned from one project could be of benefit to another project within the same project environment. As risk management in projects has evolved over the recent decades as an integral part of project management in recent time, it has gained tremendous attention within the industrial sector because of an increased awareness about the relationship between efforts to reduce risk and project success. Within the academic community, there is the existence of gap in literatures regarding risk management in multiple project environments, and for the fact that the research that has been performed within the academic community has largely focused on the idea of risk management occurring in single project environments; the research will be aimed at how risk management is implemented within the organizations that will be examined, in order to ...

This type of low frequency high impact event puts at stake the health and safety of employees, the viability of the ecosystem, the integrity of the structure, the life and health of populations in neighboring communities and can also massively impact the economic situation of a region. Prevention of major accidents is therefore of utmost importance.Detailed case studies of nine historic major accidents revealed common features in the accidents, although they represent a wide range of individual accident scenarios. Identified common features and recurring patterns were degradation of safety measures, decrease in attention and awareness towards major accident hazards as well as an increase in complacency and resulting management failures. These findings served as the basis for a prevention model specific to major accident hazards in the Oil & Gas industry. • As project management has evolved and matured, so has the executives role in project management. To ensure the success of individual projects and the organization as a whole, todays executives are increasingly involved in activities such as capacity planning, portfolio management, prioritization, and strategic planning specifically for project management. In fact, more and more executives are becoming certified Project Management Professionals (PMPs). What Executives Need to Know About Project Management offers executives a guide to project management, focusing on what they need to know and what they need to do. It provides step-by-step guidance to help executives get effective, well-resourced project management teams in place and ensure the success of any individual project. The book begins with basic principles, including a detailed discussion of the three best practices that enable executives to ensure effective project management: Developing an environment where project management is viewed as a profession Securing key personnel for project management positions Creating opportunities for rewards and advancement through successful project management Next, the book explores how executives serve as executive sponsors in project management teams, setting forth solutions to the many problems and challenges they face in this role, including managing disagreements, delegating authority, and accelerating projects. The authors explain how the role of the executive sponsor changes depending upon the life-cycle phase of the project. For example, during the project initiation and planning phases, the sponsor may take on a very active role, ensuring that proper objectives are established and that the project plan satisfies the needs of the business as well as the needs of the client. During the execution phase, the sponsor may take on a less active role; however, the book shows how executive sponsors need to become involved when roadblocks appear, crises occur, and conflicts arise over priorities among projects. Throughout the book, helpful illustrations clarify complex concepts and processes.

  • A project comprises a series of activities (investments) that aim to solve problems within a given time frame with a clear set of objectives for man's benefits. It is an undertaking that involves the commitment of scarce resources in the expectation of future benefits. Before achieving the objectives, a project goes through several stages of a project cycle. In this study, the author discusses and analyses concepts of project planning and management. On the one hand, he refers to the project in general, and on the other hand, he represents the different stages of project planning and project management.
